Chng joined Croda in 2011.
I joined Croda on the graduate trainee programme which was rotational based and it provided a great opportunity to know the organisation from different perspectives. I started as an Assistant Engineer to look after daily operations of the effluent treatment plant. I was involved in some engineering projects to optimise the effluent treatment plant operations and improve site maintenance management system. As a chemical engineering graduate, it was very fulfilling to me to experience and gain a sense of what life as an engineer is like.
After spending 7 months in Engineering, I moved to Product Assurance Department for my second rotation. As a Product Assurance Specialist, my main task was to support our commercial team and provide our global customers with accurate and timely information about our products, processes as well as their legal and regulatory status. This allows our customers to make the right decisions about using our products. Technical knowledge of our products and regulatory affairs gained proved invaluable to my subsequent placements and future career.
To broaden my horizon, I requested to be rotated into commercial departments, though it was out of my comfort zone. I joined the Personal Care sales team as a Sales Coordinator. It was definitely a perfect opportunity to gain an insight into how Croda business works. As a sales support, I provided solutions to customers and counterparts from other Croda offices regarding product, price quotations and regulatory enquiries. One of the biggest rewards is the opportunity to develop a wide network of contacts, internally and externally.
I was tasked to help out in Marketing Communications while still looking after the sales support role for a limited period of time. It was challenging juggling dual roles as I had to manage my time for both departments. Nonetheless, my time with Marketing was incredibly fun and enjoyable owing to my strong interest in design and creation, and also the creative dynamics of the department. The major highlights during my placement in Marketing were the C2G database migration project and also the set up of the E-Seminar platform for Asia region.
At the end of the 2 years rotations, I gained more understanding about my own strengths and weaknesses and led me to apply for a full time role in Synthesis department as a Development Scientist. I worked in the laboratory and pilot plants developing new molecules and technologies, at the same time provide technical support to the site for product transfer activities. Seeing the finished product developed and designed by yourself and watching the project develop from a mere idea to its commercial launch is truly satisfying.
Following an organisational change, I was appointed as Research Team Leader to lead the Synthesis team. Working closely with Synthesis counterparts from other sites, my main focus was to set up a solid grounding for new product development in Asia, and to provide innovative solutions for our customers. It is a challenging yet exciting role for me.
In May 2016, I was given an opportunity to lead both Synthesis and Personal Care Applications team in Singapore. In the new expanded role, I am responsible for new product development for all sectors and applications research for Croda Singapore’s Personal Care division. It will be fun and exciting to spend more time to learn about the cosmetic industry!
