As a responsible business and member of the Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO), we are committed to providing sustainably sourced palm oil (PO) and palm kernel oil (PKO)  products. Since 2011, we have reported progress against targets that support our objective in this area:

“To fully support sustainable palm oil and palm kernel oil and to keep working with the industry to secure a sustainable source of derivatives.”

We use an extremely low amount of pure PO and PKO and relatively small volumes of derivatives that are the result of processing the oil for food markets. The supply chain of derivatives is very complex due to the number of different producers involved; however, we are determined to catalyse change within the industry to secure a sustainable supply.

We supported the supply of sustainable PO through the Book and Claim route during 2012; purchasing GreenPalm Certificates for the 300 tonnes of pure PO and PKO that we used during the  year. With our consumption of PO derivatives being larger, we have proactively pursued sustainable sources by engaging with all of our suppliers and working closely with those who are able to offer sustainable palm derivatives using the Mass Balance process.

During 2012, our Jurong Island manufacturing site in Singapore gained certification for the Mass Balance module of the RSPO Supply Chain standard and we have established that over 80% of the products that we manufacture at this site using PO/PKO derivatives can be sourced in this way. In 2013 our UK Rawcliffe Bridge and North American Mill Hall and Atlas Point manufacturing sites moved to sustainable PO/PKO derivatives via Mass Balance and Mevisa in Spain, Thane in India and Campinas in Brazil joined in 2014. In 2015, our manufacturing sites in Gouda in the Netherlands, Leek and Hull in the UK and Chocques in France were certified, enabling us to meet our corporate target 'To have RSPO certification of all our relevant supply chains by the end of 2015'.

Target Progress Achievements to date
To have 100% RSPO certification of all our supply chains by the end of 2015 Eleven of our manufacturing sites are Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO) Supply Chain Certified to handle sustainable PO/PKO derivatives via Mass Balance. These certified sites handle more than 99% of our palm derivative volumes, enabling us to meet our corporate target 'To have RSPO certification of all our relevant supply chains by the end of 2015'.
To only supply RSPO certified palm oil ingredients by the end of 2017, subject to the feasibility of the supply chain We have continued to proactively engage with suppliers across the world, which is enabling us to extend our production of certified sustainable palm oil derivatives. The eleven sites audited so far handle 99% of our total volume of PO/PKO, demonstrating our commitment to drive SPO forwards.

Looking Ahead

We are actively working with our customers to move their purchasing of our PO products to our certified supply chains. We will also continue to work closely with our suppliers to ensure that all PO supply chains can be certified by 2017.
