Crude oil desalting is one of the most critical steps in the refining process, as salt present in crude oil can cause significant problems such as corrosion, catalyst poisoning and fouling.

Typical crude oil emulsions to be desalted have low amounts of water and are less stable due to larger droplet sizes and the removal of naturally occurring emulsion stabilisers in the original demulsification stage.
