Croda, a global specialty chemical company, has conducted a study which shows the moisturising active DuraQuench IQ SA, can deliver scalp moisturisation and hair conditioning benefits when used at 1% w/w in a rinse-off hair care product. This exciting new data broadens DuraQuench IQ SA’s application capabilities, making it an attractive proposition for hair care applications, in addition to its already established skin care applications market.

Scalp care has become a growing need for many consumers over recent years. The scalp is an area of skin which has often been overlooked within hair care. Like other areas of the skin, the scalp is frequently exposed to products and environments which can affect its healthy state. This has now been recognised by consumers and the market is witnessing more products promising to deliver scalp care benefits. According to GNPD Mintel, in 2006, only 8.3% of all hair care products launched made reference to a scalp care benefit. In 2014 (January to October), this figure has almost doubled. To date, 15.6% of products launched incorporated scalp benefits, clearly emphasising the true need of scalp care within today’s hair care products. 

Proven Scalp Moisturisation and Hair Conditioning Benefits

DuraQuench IQ SA has been shown to deliver effective scalp moisturisation benefits from rinse-off hair products, meeting the growing consumer demand for scalp care within the hair care market. Not only does DuraQuench IQ SA deliver essential scalp moisturisation, the complex provides additional hair conditioning benefits making the ingredient an attractive proposition for hair care formulators.

In a specially designed instrumental study, DuraQuench IQ SA was proven to significantly increase hydration as well as limit the transepidermal water loss from the scalp in a shampoo and conditioner formulation. An expert panel evaluated the sensorial properties of DuraQuench IQ SA on the hair and found the ingredient to enhance wet detangling as well as deliver exceptional hair softness. 

Consumer Perceivable Scalp Moisturisation and Hair Conditioning Benefits

Not only does DuraQuench IQ SA deliver instrumentally proven scalp moisturisation and hair conditioning benefits, these effects have been shown to be consumer perceivable. Throughout the instrumental study, panellists were asked to complete a sensory questionnaire. The results indicated that DuraQuench IQ SA can offer consumer perceivable scalp moisturisation and hair softness attributes.

In an additional take home study, panellists compared the DuraQuench IQ SA formulations to control formulations in a blind study. The results confirmed further the consumer perceivable effects DuraQuench IQ SA can offer as the panellists noticed an increase in scalp moisturisation, hair softness, hair shine and nourishment as well as a reduction in the oiliness of the hair.
