Innovative ways to reduce energy use

Today (June 1) Croda celebrates the opening of a major energy saving initiative, a bio-fermenter and an additional production plant at their manufacturing site at Gouda in the Netherlands.

To celebrate the innovative character of these projects an opening ceremony is being attended by members of Croda’s Executive Committee, representatives from the suppliers involved in the project, and a number of invited guests from Gouda and the local community.

The new bio-fermenter will create bio-gas using glycerin water, which is a by-product of one of the major processes on site. This bio-gas will be used as a source of renewable energy for the site and will partly replace natural gas in the production of steam and electricity. This, combined with a modified main boiler and thermal power system, should reduce site CO2 emissions by 25%, hence the ‘Quarterback’ name given to the project (www.quarterback4life.nl).

The celebrations also see a new production plant open, which will enable the site to meet the grow customer demand for their products to every more stringent  quality requirements thanks to  Croda’s innovative treatment of fatty acid molecules.
