Awards and certifications
Many aspects of our sustainability commitment have been recognised externally, and we actively seek certification in key areas of our operations
Britain’s Most Admired Company Awards
In 2021 Croda was named the eighth most admired company in Britain. These awards are based on a peer review of corporate reputation that includes interviews with board directors, analysts and City commentators. We received high recognition from our peers regarding leadership and specifically recognised for our focus on sustainability.
World Sustainability Awards
In 2021, we were awarded Business of the Year at the World Sustainability Awards. Awards like this are possible thanks to the collective effort of all our employees who are working towards us achieving our ambition to become the most sustainable supplier of innovative ingredients.
ACC sustainability leadership
We are delighted to be one of seven companies recognised by the American Chemistry Council (ACC) in their Sustainability Leadership Awards. These awards have highlighted the amazing work by our colleagues at Avanti Polar Lipids, recognising the ‘societal contribution’ their smart science has made to the development and deployment of the Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine.
Authorised Economic Operator certification
We meet customs control procedures and our role in the international supply chain is secure.
External carbon verification
Our scope 1, 2 and 3 emissions are externally verified. In 2021 we received reasonable verification, the highest level.
Climate neutral manufacturing
Offsetting emissions means our beauty actives operations are carbon neutral for their manufacturing processes
COSMetic Organic Standard (COSMOS)
Many of our products are certified COSMOS ORGANIC or COSMOS NATURAL, or conform to these standards. This means we:
- Promote the use of products from organic agriculture and respect biodiversity
- Use natural resources responsibly and respect the environment
- Use processing and manufacturing practices that are clean and respectful to human health and the environment
The European Federation for Cosmetic Ingredients
All Croda manufacturing sites that handle cosmetic products operate to the EFfCI Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) standard, an international excipients certification that:
- Indicates the quality and safety of our cosmetic ingredients
- Provides customers with a guarantee of quality and performance consistency to support their product claims
- Ensures patient safety through quality
Our beauty actives business helped to define and establish ERI 360° labelling for eco responsible ingredients, working with 13 French cosmetics companies, the Perfumes Aromas Scents Savours (PASS) group and France Eco-Extraction association. The label establishes an accurate assessment of the social impacts of a product. Eight Croda products have already received this accreditation.
Our excipient manufacturing sites have all completed the audit requirements of EXCiPACT and been successfully certified. Croda was the first multi-site excipient supplier to achieve global EXCiPACT accreditation across its production facilities. This certifies that all our excipient sites manufacture according to the EXCiPACT Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) Certification Standard.
We offer a wide range of halal certified speciality products manufactured at Croda sites around the globe.
We are committed to ensuring the raw materials in our products are sampled and purchased in accordance with national and international Access and Benefit Sharing legislation and best practices. This is particularly relevant to innovations in biotechnology, plant extracts and derivatives.
As you would expect, our manufacturing sites and offices have achieved numerous international certifications relating to quality and standards. These include:
The European Regulation on Registration, Evaluation, Authorisation and Restriction of Chemicals (REACH) is designed to ensure sufficient information is available on chemicals made and used in the EU. We are committed to helping industry achieve the ultimate goal of REACH: it is complementary to our internal approaches to ensure an adequate understanding of chemical hazards and innovating through technology to improve chemical safety profiles.
We have a longstanding commitment to Responsible Care: ensuring everything we do from sourcing raw materials to running manufacturing sites and product guidance for safe use and disposal is fully integrated into how we run our company.
All Croda manufacturing sites must complete the Supplier Ethical Data Exchange (SEDEX) Self-Assessment Questionnaire. This means we can provide customers with detailed sustainability information relevant to the sites they receive ingredients from.
Sustainable palm oil
The 13 Croda manufacturing sites handling palm oil and its derivatives are certified by the Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO). In 2021, 85% of our global palm derivatives consumption was RSPO physically certified by Mass Balance. In 2022, we received the highest rating of ‘compliant practices’ in the Action for Sustainable Derivatives (ASD) Sustainable Palm Index.
We are committed to the United Nations Global Compact (UNGC) and have submitted our Advanced Communication of Progress during 2021.
Union for Ethical Biotrade
Part of our beauty actives business, Sederma, is a fully accredited member of the Union for Ethical Biotrade. This means we are committed to the standards required to continuously develop and integrate ethical sourcing practices in plant collection. It includes respecting traditional know-how, improving the living conditions of local populations and ensuring traceability of raw materials.
USDA certified biobased
Our bio-based ECO Range is the most extensive portfolio of 100% renewable surfactants on the market. Using an alternate route to ethoxylated (EO) products using bioethanol from biomass sources, this range significantly increases bio-based content and reduces reliance on fossil fuels. Our products are tested and registered with the USDA BioPreferred® Program*.
