THE market opportunity for bond builders and hair repair

Stronger, healthier hair is the top priority for today’s hair care consumers.

Demand for bond builders, which repair broken bonds that cause hair weakness and can lead to dullness and frizz, is especially on the rise.

What is the science powering KeraBio K31?

KeraBio K31 was created using engineering biology, with polypeptides programmed from human genetic instructions.

This biomimetic bond builder is identical to human keratin, hair’s natural protein, which strengthens and improves hair’s manageability.

The first keratin bond builder that's biotech by design

Traditional keratin comes from complex natural sources and can vary in composition and structure.

Croda scientists have skilfully developed a unique biotech process to create Kerabio K31, a process that guarantees repeatability in production of the target molecule and molecule performance.

Designed from nature, to act naturally

Working in harmony with the hair’s own biology, KeraBio K31 biomimetic peptide integrates deep into the hair fibre cortex to recharge compromised keratin, strengthening and replenishing the hair’s building blocks with a molecule that mirrors its natural structure.

What are KeraBio K31's key benefits in the hair bond-building space?

It’s 99% naturally derived, vegan and biodegradable

Not only meeting consumer demand for deep molecular-level hair repair, but also their desire to move away from animal-based ingredients.

It’s potent at low inclusion levels of 0.05% active

Formulators can include complementary ingredients easily to differentiate their product in the marketplace and design a high-performing bond-builder to align with their brand.

It gives access to cutting-edge biotech that cut costs and speed to market

Offering hair care brands, the opportunity to use KeraBio K31’s biotech derived innovation in their bond-building formulations cuts research time, regulatory requirements and costs, allowing them to focus on growing their share of the market and what’s possible in hair care.

Is KeraBio K31 a gamechanger for Croda and hair repair?

Since its launch, KeraBio K31 has outperformed market expectations , solidifying its position as the leading hair repair technology in the market today .

The recombinant protein  platform that Croda has developed and our ability to specifically design keratin sequences means KeraBio K31 is just the start. This is a platform technology, and we anticipate there will be further KeraBios and high performing  keratins that Croda will produce.

But we don't have to stop at keratins, as we grow our understanding of other proteins and biotech, you will see Croda develop and support future ingredient launches targeting personalisation in hair and scalp care.

Biotech is providing a more sustainable supply of ingredients

Traditional extraction and manufacturing methods can be resource-intensive, putting pressure on natural resources such as water and land use. Some ingredients, such as rare botanicals, are also expensive and difficult to source.

Biotechnology enables our R&D teams to create ingredients in controlled lab environments that offer customers access to a more consistent and scalable supply chain.

Ceramides are just one example. These ingredients were traditionally derived from animal sources such as sheep's wool (lanolin). Now, formulators have the option to use Croda’s SphingoCare ceramides, which are biotech-derived through yeast fermentation. This reduces the ingredient’s environmental impact and aligns with the growing consumer demand for cruelty-free and vegan products. And it provides our customers with high-purity, sustainable ingredients for skin barrier repair.
